Ellen van Dijk has won the third stage of the Ladies Tour of Qatar. The rider of the Boels-Dolmans Cycling Team escaped form a front group of twelve riders en soloed to victory in the stage that led the riders from Al Zubarah Fort to Madinat Al Shaml. The Ducht rider won exactly the same stage last year. In the General Classification Van Dijk is on the virtual podium with a third place 31 seconds behind leader Trixi Worrack. Team mate Romy Kasper is second on 17 seconds of the leader.
Van Dijk was happy about the result. "It's very special to win on exactly the same place for a second year in a row. Just like yesterday I was feeling very strong, but today I could use these strong legs to win. It was a hard stage and I suffered a lot while I was alone in the front for 2 kilometres, but it was all worth it."
“They were really motivated to show they are better than their mistake yesterday,” said team manager Danny Stam in reference to his riders missing out splits on stage two. “They are in good shape, and we had control from the start. Ellen shows she was the strongest in the final.”
“It will be really hard to go for the overall because the stage is not that hard tomorrow,” said Stam. “It’s easy local laps in the final. But never say never.”
