Boels-Dolmans Cycling Team is proud to announce that Richard Groenendaal will join its staff in 2019. The former professional cyclist and cyclocrosser will be added to the team as a sports director.
“Richard will start working for the team part time in 2019,” says team manager Danny Stam. “We will see how we’re going to develop our cooperation after that. I’m happy to have his experience in the team next year.”
“I’m really looking forward to this new challenge,” says Groenendaal. “I will support Danny as the second sports director for a number of races in 2019. It’s great that I can use my experience and expertise in support of this women’s team.”
Groenendaal looks back on a fantastic career, with a focus on cyclocross. In the discipline, he became Dutch champion eight times, won the world title in front of a home crowd in 1999-2000 and won the overall World Cup three times. Additionally, he earned a national title on mountainbike.
After his own sports career, Groenendaal guided U23 riders as sports director for the Rabobank Development Team until 2017. When the team folded at the end of 2016, Groenendaal took up the role of facility manager for the new Shimano headquarters in Eindhoven. Now he is ready to return into the professional cycling scene.
“My focus will be on the road races, but as a former professional cyclocross racer, I might be able to support Boels-Dolmans’ offroaders as well,” sayd Groenendaal. “But that’s something we’ll discuss later, first I’m going to take up my new role in the 2019 road season. I’m hugely looking forward to it.”
