The third stage in the Giro Rosa did not go smoothly for Boels-Dolmans. Amy Pieters finished eighth in the 132 kilometer long stage in and around Corbetta, but team captain Megan Guarnier lost valuable time due to a crash in the last six kilometers. Also Skylar Schneider, Anna Plichta and Karol-Ann Canuel were involved in that massive crash. In the general classification, Pieters is now eighth, Chantal Blaak ninth.
The stage was animated by a breakaway from Sara Penton (Team Virtu Cycling), Carmela Cipriani (Conceria Zabri) and Chiara Perini (Top Girls Fassa Bortolo). The three got a gap of two minutes and lasted for a long time. Only in the last five kilometers the three were caught.
"There was a massive crash in the front of the peloton with five kilometers to go," thus Guarnier. "Karo, Anna, Skylar and I all crashed. Skylar then acted as a mechanic and fixed my bike and helped me on my way again. Anna then gave everything to bring me back to the second group. That was not easy, but we did succeed. Eventually I lose a minute but it could have been a lot more. "
Our youngster Skylar Schneider was involved in the crash too and admits racing the Giro is very different than what she is used too. "Today's stage was a flat sixteen kilometer course we had to do eight times. It was pretty uneventful all day so we just tried to stay calm and hydrated. Unfortunately on a narrow road around five kilometer to go there was a big crash that Karo, Megan, Anna and I could not avoid. We were able to finish the stage and will now look forward to the next days. For me everything has been very different than what I'm used to, so in just the first three stages I have learned a lot and the importance of prioritizing rest, hydration, and eating a lot!"
The fourth stage is a relatively flat stage of 109 kilometers from and to Piacenza. It is expected that it will end up in another bunch sprint.
