Medals for Guarnier, Canuel and Schneider at National Championships

26 June 2018

Last week the national championships already took place in the United States and in Canada. In the United States Megan Guarnier sprinted to second place in the road race behind Coryn Rivera, while Karol-Ann Canuel finished second in the time trial in Canada just a few seconds behind Leah Kirchmann. Skylar Schneider finished twice on the podium in the U23 cateogory. In the road race she finished in third place, in the criterium championship in second place.

The national championships in the United States took place in Knoxville, Tennessee. The road race (June 24) over 114 kilometers was held in warm, humid conditions. After the breakaway was caught in the last five kilometers, Guarnier tried with a late attempt to surprise Rivera but had to acknowledge her superiority on the finish line.

Skylar Schneider, who claimed two medals, was very happy with the performance in Knoxville. "In the road race I was happy and willing to ride a selfless race for Megan. The two of us managed to really animated the race and I am quite proud of the way we raced. Megan tried everything to become national champion for a fourth time, but Coryn was faster. It was a nice surprise to finish third in the U23 category after a hard day of work.”

A day earlier, the criterium championship was also held in Knoxville. Only Schneider did competed for Boels-Dolmans. “The criterium was a big personal goal of mine, it was a good challenging course as well as the added element of the rain. I was sure to be safe and ride a perfect position. It was a bit of a gamble at the end with a late break going up the road, although I didn’t accomplish my goal it was still a nice feeling to win a U23 silver medal.”

In Canada, the championship took place in Saguenay, North of Quebec city. The 25.1 kilometer time trial was over a rolling course with several climbs. The wind also played a role.

“The Time Trial was a hard course.”, thus the 2017 champion Canuel. “It didn’t go as planned for me. I was hopeful to repeat my victory from last year. I just had a bad day and couldn’t get the pace I wanted. Unfortunately I lost with eight seconds but that is bike racing. I am looking forward to go back with the team to race the Giro Rosa in two weeks.”
