Majerus takes over leader’s jersey in Elsy Jacobs after stage one win

28 April 2018

Christine Majerus has won stage one in the Festival Elsy Jacobs on Saturday. Led out by 2018 Healthy Ageing Tour winner Amy Pieters, the Luxembourg champion won by two bike lengths ahead of Alexis Ryan (Canyon-SRAM) and Eugenia Bujak (BTC City Ljulbjana).

“It wasn’t an easy day,” said Majerus. “I had already better legs than yesterday, but I was happy to have a strong team around me, so that we could share the work really good.”

In yesterday’s prologue, Pieters finished in second place, just hundreds of seconds behind winner Lisa Klein (Canyon-SRAM). Majerus finished sixth, three seconds down, and Jip van den Bos took thirteenth place at five seconds from Klein.

Stage one today was a road race with five local laps at the end. The finish line was drawn atop a short climb in the city of Steinfort, where a small crash hindered Anna Plichta in the penultimate lap. A little later, rain drops started to come down.

“The rain started in the last lap, so it didn’t influence my sprint or our sprint preparation,” Majerus said. “With Amy leading me out, we were always well positioned.”

“The other girls kept both of us out of trouble until that last climb and from there on I just followed Amy,” continued Majerus. “There was a crash in the last corner, but we were in front so it wasn’t a problem for us. At that point, I asked Amy to keep up the speed, because once you lose momentum in this sprint, it’s over.”

“She did it perfectly,” said Majerus of her teammate’s hard work. “I tried hard in the last 200 metres. I didn’t want to make the whole work of the team worth nothing. And I won, so I’m really happy.”

With her stage win, Majerus also takes over the yellow leader’s jersey from Klein. Last year’s Elsy Jacobs winner now has one stage left to defend her leader’s position. The stage tomorrow starts at 2.00pm CET and live coverage is expected from start to finish on elsy-jacobs.lu
