Boels-Dolmans Cycling Team has won the Women’s WorldTour team time trial in Vårgårda for the third year in a row on Saturday. With a time of 53’07”8, Boels-Dolmans was exactly sixteen seconds faster than world TTT champions Team Sunweb. Cervélo-Bigla finished third, 47 seconds behind.
After weeks of hot and dry summer weather, storms entered Sweden this week and the Vårgårda team time trial was held in very wet conditions. It made the discipline of team time trialling even harder than it already is.
Still, the six Boels-Dolmans riders did not let that faze them. Anna van der Breggen travelled to Sweden from Glasgow, where she earned silver in the European time trial championships only three days ago. Amalie Dideriksen, taking the European title on the madison on Tuesday, and Amy Pieters, winning bronze in the same race, were also part of the line-up.
The other three in the Vårgårda team time trial squad were Luxembourg time trial champion Christine Majerus, former Canadian time trial champion Karol-Ann Canuel and world road champion Chantal Blaak.
“It was wet for sure,” said Blaak. “Fortunately, everyone had the same conditions, so there wasn’t any difference between teams. Everyone had to deal with the wet circumstances.”
At the second intermediate split, Team Sunweb still held the fastest time, six seconds ahead of Boels-Dolmans. However, at the finish, the orange train set the fastest time to take the third win in a row at the Vãrgãrda team time trial.
On Monday, the team will have another race in Vårgårda as the 141-kilometer road race forms round 18 in the Women’s WorldTour. Canuel will be replaced by Megan Guarnier.
