The Boels-Dolmans Cycling Team wishes to express its gratitude for the many messages of sympathy it received after the news that mechanic Richard Steege has been struck by a heart attack. This is highly appreciated by the entire team and Richard’s family.
Last Monday, just before the riders set off for a recovery ride after the Amstel Gold Race on Sunday, Richard collapsed after having a heart attack. Dave Brailsford and the Team Sky medical staff, who stayed in the same hotel, immediately took action and resuscitated Richard, after which he was taken directly to hospital.
“We are very grateful to the people at Team Sky and the hospital for acting so quickly and adequately,” says team manager Danny Stam. “Richard is with us in every race throughout the year and is a very important person in the Boels-Dolmans family.”
On Wednesday before the start of the Flèche Wallonne, the team received the comforting news that Richard had woken up and was aware of his surroundings. This morning, Richard was moved from the intensive care unit at Maastricht University Medical Center. The first signs are positive, but the developments in the next few days will determine his further recovery.
“We missed him the last few days, not only because he is so good at what he does for the team, but more importantly as a person,” continues Stam. “We hope that Richard will make a full recovery quickly and our thoughts were with him throughout the race on Wednesday in the Flèche Wallonne. Anna van der Breggen contributed her win to him. We will race with Richard on our thoughts again on Sunday.”
