Amy Pieters has finished fifth in the second stage of the Giro Rosa. The 27-year-old from The Netherlands was well-protected by her teammates in the one hundred and twenty kilometers long stage in and around Ovada won by Kirsten Wild. In the overall ranking, Pieters has now moved up to the twelfth place.
The stage was animated by Sheyla Gutierrez (Cylance Pro Cycling) and Alice Maria Arzuffi (Bizkaia Durango-Euskadi Murias). The two got a maximum lead of three minutes and lasted for a long time. The two were chased down in the final three hundred meters of the race.
Amy Pieters was surrounded by Chantal Blaak, Christine Majerus and the Polish Anna Plichta in the hilly final kilometer.
"I felt very good today," thus Pieters. "Only I lost the wheel of Chantal and Christine in the sprint, which meant that I had to come from afar. Fortunately, I was still able to finish fifth but of course I would love to have won after the work the team did in the final. Anna Plichta was also very strong. It was very warm today and the stage was anything but flat."
The third stage is a flat stage of 132 kilometers in Corbetta. They have to complete eight laps of 16.5 kilometers. It is expected that it will end up in another bunch sprint.
